Planning on doing a triathlon – focus on quality gear!!!

On 19th September 2022, I attempted my first triathlon at the beautiful location of Kilifi on the coast of Kenya. Even though it was only the sprint distance (swim 750m/bike 20km MTB/ run 5km trail) it made me super nervous because never before have I done the combo in a single event.

Given the limited time, my training went pretty well with all the inconsistencies…..not matter how hard I trained at swimming, I had succumbed to the fact that my race will begin when I get out of the water…..

For me a key part of the preparation for the event was ensuring that all the gear I would use was of superior quality because I don’t like to leave anything to chance….QUALITY above FASHION but if it also looks great then it is a bonus….

Being a cyclist, I had the confidence of my Specialized MTB (old faithful) and of course the SQUIRT chain lube on the drivetrain given the sandy conditions on the coast to ensure smooth and proper shifting. I also invested in a multi-sport watch from Wahoo, the Rival which is super easy to use and also connects to my Wahoo Roam bike computer so that I can view all data when on the bike….Super important investment was the tri-suit, needed something super comfortable and with sufficient bum support and not too much, hence settle on the first Ascent sleeveless suit with all the technology enhancements of the garment. Finally shoes has always been a difficult one but after stepping into the Hoka Clifton (feels like bedroom slippers) and made the run all the more enjoyable.

Happy to report that the event was awesome, all legs went pretty well and the transitions were also good. The gear used withstood the conditions well and will be used in future events…..
